INTRODUCTION


DEXONA contains Dexamethasone which belongs to a group of medicines called Corticosteroids which occur naturally in the body. It is indicated for endocrine disorders, rheumatic disorders, collagen diseases, dermatologic diseases, allergic states, ophthalmic diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory disease, hematologic disorders, neoplastic disorders, edematous states and cerebral edema.


Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid (adrenocortical hormone), which boosts your body and treats various illnesses involving inflammation in the body. Before receiving DEXONA inform your doctor if you have liver, kidney or heart problems, are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your physician will give the correct dose depends on your child’s age and body weight.

HOW DEXONA WORKS


Dexamethasone works by decreasing inflammation (swelling), prevents infection and fights with white blood cells and also alters the body's normal immune system responses.



 








DIRECTIONS FOR USE


DEXONA will be administered as intramuscularly (into a muscle) or intravenously (into a vein) by your doctor or nurse.



 








SIDE EFFECTS OF DEXONA






COMMON



  • Headache

  • Slow healing of cuts and bruises

  • Thin, fragile or dry skin

  • Red or purple blotches or lines under the skin

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS


Headache:


Rest and drink plenty of fluids. Apply a wet or cold cloth to forehead and rest in a quiet, comfortable, dark room.

DEXONA should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consult your doctor for advice.



 








BREASTFEEDING


DEXONA is not recommended for use during breastfeeding. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.



 








KIDNEY


DEXONA should be used with caution in patients with active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.



 








LIVER


DEXONA should be used with caution in patients with active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.



 








ALLERGY


Tell your physician if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Dexamethasone.



 








HEART DISEASE


DEXONA should be used with caution in patients suffering from active heart diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.



 








OTHERS


Tell your physician, if you have or had,



  • Bacteremia

  • Systemic fungal infections

  • Glaucoma

  • Cushing's syndrome

  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers

  • Viral infections such as varicella and herpes genitalis

  • Tuberculosis

  • Ocular herpes simplex

  • Hypothyroidism



 





 








INTERACTIONS


Tell your doctor if you are taking,



  • Phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin), phenobarbital, ephedrine and rifampin (treats epilepsy)

  • Potassium depleting diuretics

  • Coumarin anticoagulants
